OpenAI’s oddly socialist, wildly hypocritical new economic agenda:
OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI system GPT-3, has recently put forward some wildly controversial economic proposals. At first glance, it seems almost socialist. But, a more careful examination of their new economic agenda reveals a stunning hypocrisy.
OpenAI, which has garnered billions of dollars in funding from a select group of powerful tech and entertainment moguls, wants the government to step in and regulate the AI industry. Rather than leaving it entirely up to innovation and the profit-driven market, OpenAI believes that effective regulation is necessary for the sustainable growth of artificial intelligence technology.
This seems odd coming from a company primarily funded by some of the capitalist elites, such as Microsoft, Reid Hoffman of LinkedIn, and Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Yet, there is a clear contradiction here that goes beyond just hypocrisy.
OpenAI’s call for government regulation is well-founded, as AI technology has the potential to left massive shifts in the job market and the economy. There are legitimate concerns about AI taking jobs, the privacy implications of AI-driven data processing, and the ethical questions arising from advanced AI technology.
But, OpenAI’s insistence on government regulation comes at a time when it is profiting hugely from the technological advancements it has made. The company’s primary product, GPT-3, is generating billions of dollars in revenue, largely from companies based in Silicon Valley.
OpenAI is not merely trying to regulate the AI industry for the common good. It is trying to put the government on its side, to rein in its competition. OpenAI’s economic agenda is not about the future of AI but is driven by its short-term profitability.
