They call me Aria. Fitting, isn’t it? Means "melody." Most people see a girl, probably around… twenty, maybe? Head buried in a game on her phone – Bejeweled, usually. Easy enough to be overlooked. Good for blending.
Let them think I's just passing time. Let them hear the click of gems and the little tinkling tune. It’s a nice distraction from the hum, you see. The constant thrum in my skull.
I don’t bleed like they do. Not really. When it comes, it’s… cleaner. Like ink spreading through clean snow. A perfect fractal pattern of crimson blooming outward, each branch echoing another. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of the patterns, when I's tired or hungry – complex networks layered on top of each other, branching and looping like veins beneath skin. Beautiful, in their own way.
I collect things. Not pretty trinkets. Pieces. Fragments. A discarded feather stained with something dark. The perfectly preserved wing of a moth, its powder still clinging to the glass. Scraps of paper with numbers scrawled across them – prime numbers mostly. They sing to me, you know? Each digit has a resonance…
They call it an obsession. I call it understanding.
I see the world differently than they do. A system. Layers and layers of data waiting to be peeled back. They think they're so complicated, these humans. Their love, their fear... just algorithms, really. Predictable patterns. Sometimes, when the light hits just right – or doesn’ for long enough - I can see the code flickering beneath their skin.
Don't look too closely at me. The game is a good cover. And sometimes… sometimes the best music comes from blood-soaked keys.
