+ TOPIC: MachineLearning
2
+ TITLE: Is transfer learning and fine-tuning still necessary with modern zero-shot models?
3
+ CONTENT: Hello. I am a machine learning student, I have been doing this for a while, and I found a concept called "transfer learning" and topics like "fine tuning". In short, my dream is to be an ML or AI engineer. Lately I hear that all the models that are arriving, such as Sam Anything (Meta), Whisper (Open AI), etc., are zero-shot models that do not require tuning no matter how specific the problem is. The truth is, I ask this because right now at university we are studying PyTorch and transfer learning. and If in reality it is no longer necessary to tune models because they are zero-shot, then it does not make sense to learn architectures and know which optimizer or activation function to choose to find an accurate model. Could you please advise me and tell me what companies are actually doing? To be honest, I feel bad. I put a lot of effort into learning optimization techniques, evaluation, and model training with PyTorch.

+ TOPIC: AITA
2
+ TITLE: AITA for exposing a local “beloved” pet sitter that wasn’t showing up even though she said she was
3
+ CONTENT:
4
+
5
+ Sorry this is a long one… I have used a pet sitter that came highly recommended starting back in 2021. At first she was fantastic, would send pics of my fur babies every time she came. Was reliable and always helped me out in a pinch.
6
+ Starting in 2023, I noticed she wasnt sending pics every time she was supposed to be at the house. This made me a bit suspicious. But the fur babies were happy, there was food and water for them, so I chalked it up to the fact I have been using her for a while and we had built trust.
7
+ Fast forward to November of 2024, I had to abruptly leave the country because my daughter was studying over seas and had a very serious medical emergency. My husband happened to out of town for work at the same time, so I hired her to care for our two cats for a few days.
8
+ When my husband got home, there was poop all up our stairs, by the front door, and down the hallway. He said it was an absolute mess and the whole house stunk. If the sitter was actually coming, there was no way she would have not been able to see it. My cats never pooped outside of the liter box, so this was highly unusual. I didn’t confront the person, I just paid her, figured it was a one off but I would never hire her again. And again, I was dealing w my daughter’s medical condition in a hospital in a foreign country that English isn’t their primary language, along with me dealing with breast cancer for 15 months. The cats were fine and I had bigger fish to fry at that point.
9
+ Fast forward to this past weekend.
10
+ Someone posted on a community FB page about a pet sitter, didn’t name names, but had the exact same experience as me. So I DM’d the OP asked her if it was so and so, she said that is exactly who it is and mentioned that quite a few others messaging her asking who it was and then saying they had the same experience with her.
11
+ On top of having poop in the house, the OP said this person did not show up on the cameras, so she confronted the pet sitter. The pet sitter denied it all, became defensive, started gas lighting the OP and eventually blocked her on FB.
12
+ This wasn’t a one off like I had initially thought and felt this couldn’t keep happening. This is neglectful, fraudulent, and abusive. So I commented on the post that if anyone wants to know who this sitter is to DM and I will let them know the name.
13
+ One person in particular reached out to me, she hired this pet sitter to care for her elderly cat. The sitter was to give her cat two shots a day. Again, the sitter didn’t show up on her cameras but only for two out of 5 days and when they got home the cat was sick, they had to rush it to the vet and unfortunately the cat had to be euthanized.
14
+ Now I am even more mad. Not only because of that story but I had probably 10 others come forward with similar stories as mine.
15
+ On Monday, I decided to make a post on the community page naming names. And again, more people came forward! Some remained anonymous because fear of retaliation. I decided to post a review on her business Facebook page and encouraged others to do so and of course, by this point word got around that I was exposing her. She posted on her page that she didn’t even know me and only watched my dog once. So I posted receipts. She took them down.
16
+ She messaged me privately saying that I am ruining her good reputation and costing her to lose business, that I am defaming her, bullying her and that if I don’t take my review down, she will have no other choice than to call her lawyer. I told her this is my truth of what happened and that if she can provide pictures of the pets for each and every time she was hired to watch them that I would gladly remove my review, post a public apology, and even put a sign on my lawn advertising for her. All she has to do is post receipts.
17
+ So far that has not been done. In all of this, it has come to my attention that her long time partner is in jail (long story), so it’s been a tough year and I am sure she is suffering from some mental health issues, which makes me feel bad. So AITA for exposing her so publicly?

+ TOPIC: TIFU
2
+ TITLE: TIFU by allowing my husband to come to dinner at my boss' house
3
+ CONTENT: This actually took place a couple of years ago.
4
+ I had just gotten a brand new job that I was really excited about. So I was delighted when my boss - who I had been trying to establish a rapport with - invited me and my husband over to her home for dinner.
5
+ Well, mostly delighted. My husband is..... well... he's the sweetest, but he has a history of doing really dumb shit. Because of this, I was worried about him coming along.
6
+ By the time the day of the dinner arrived, I had become so anxious about it that I actually floated the idea by my boss that I wasn't sure if he would be able to make it. She was clearly taken aback and responded "Oh no! I really hope he can, I have a dinner for 3 all ready to go." Upon seeing her dismay, I assured her that I was sure he would find a way to be there.
7
+ Well, we made it over to her apartment on time and things actually started out really, really well. It was actually just the 3 of us, which surprised me somewhat but made me a little less concerned about my husband - as crowds really tend to bring out his unpredictability.
8
+ I had just started to finally relax and was a couple bites into a deliciously cooked steak when things took a horrible... horrible turn.
9
+ My boss had just stepped into the kitchen to check on dessert when I noticed something odd out of the corner of my eye. It was one of those things where you know something strange his happening in your peripheral, but you're not sure what... you have to look over and focus your gaze to really comprehend it.
10
+ I look over at my husband and see him holding his steak in his hand, hovering it just an inch or two above his plate. Before I had a chance to fully comprehend what I was seeing and verbalize something that might have saved all of us from the coming horror.... he threw his steak - baseball style - across the room straight into the dining room window. It hit the window, making a loud noise, and slowly slid down.
11
+ Now my husband does dumb shit, I already told you that. But he's not a crazy person. Usually when he does dumb shit I at least understand what he's thinking. There' usually some semblance of rhyme or reason to the dumb shit.
12
+ In this case I was just dumbfounded. I couldn't believe my eyes. I couldn't wrap my head around what was going on. I stared at him with what must have been the most confused look, and watched as he stared back at me, an expression of utter horror painted across his face.
13
+ I couldn't make any sense of what was happening, but I also didn't have time to try. I heard the foot steps of my boss, coming to see what the sound was.
14
+ It suddenly sunk in that it didn't matter why he did what he did. He did it and we were all about to come face to face with a very awkward situation.
15
+ I could feel the anger flush through my face. For a brief moment I contemplated trying to help my husband get out of this. But No. This was his dumb-shit-bed and he could lie in it. Not like there was any possible recovery anyway.
16
+ My boss walks in and sees the steak lying on the window sill There's the fucking longest most awkward pause where we all just sit there frozen. My boss and I are staring at my husband, forcing the ball into his court, as the cringe just hangs in the air like an ocean fog.
17
+ He finally manages to mutter some incoherent garbage about being a clutz and even tries to get me to back him up. I leave his ass out to dry in the deafening silence.
18
+ He makes a poor attempt at cleaning the window and retrieves his steak. Mercifully, my boss asks me a question about work and we both dive eagerly into conversation.
19
+ We all resume the rest of the evening pretending that he isn't there, a sort of unspoken agreement by all that this is the only way to move forward.
20
+ As soon as we got to the car, my husband turned into a nervous chatterbox trying to explain himself.
21
+ Turns out the dumbass didn't like the way his steak was cooked (rare) and - get this - he thought the window was open. My husband, ladies and gentleman, tried to chuck his steak out a 3-story window. He thought that was a reasonable solution to being served an under-cooked steak.
22
+ A year or so later my boss hosted a Christmas party for the company at her newly-built home. My best friend, Jennie, was my +1.
