SubscribeElectrostatic Photoluminescence Tuning in All-Solid-State Perovskite Transistors
We demonstrate an all solid state semiconductor device, based on epitaxial single crystalline metal halide perovskites, enabling reversible control of a perovskite photoluminescence with a gate voltage. Fundamentally distinct from electroluminescent diodes, such a photoluminescence field effect transistor uses the gate electric field to electrostatically modulate the interfacial density of mobile charges, thereby affecting the radiative and nonradiative recombination channels of photocarriers. Varying the gate voltage in such transistors efficiently changes the rate of nonradiative interfacial recombination and modulates the photoluminescence intensity by 65 to 98 percent (depending on temperature). At favorable gating, nearly complete elimination of non-radiative losses can be achieved. This functionality, coupled with the strong visible-range absorption and emission, possible due to the high absorption coefficient, as well as controllable thickness and macroscopically homogeneous morphology of epitaxial perovskite films, leads to high external photoluminescence quantum efficiencies realized in large-area, thin-film devices. Such high-efficiency, scalable, electrostatically tunable optoelectronic switches broaden the potential applications of metal-halide perovskites in photonics and optoelectronics.
Marsellus: A Heterogeneous RISC-V AI-IoT End-Node SoC with 2-to-8b DNN Acceleration and 30%-Boost Adaptive Body Biasing
Emerging Artificial Intelligence-enabled Internet-of-Things (AI-IoT) System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for augmented reality, personalized healthcare, and nano-robotics need to run many diverse tasks within a power envelope of a few tens of mW over a wide range of operating conditions: compute-intensive but strongly quantized Deep Neural Network (DNN) inference, as well as signal processing and control requiring high-precision floating-point. We present Marsellus, an all-digital heterogeneous SoC for AI-IoT end-nodes fabricated in GlobalFoundries 22nm FDX that combines 1) a general-purpose cluster of 16 RISC-V Digital Signal Processing (DSP) cores attuned for the execution of a diverse range of workloads exploiting 4-bit and 2-bit arithmetic extensions (XpulpNN), combined with fused MAC&LOAD operations and floating-point support; 2) a 2-8bit Reconfigurable Binary Engine (RBE) to accelerate 3x3 and 1x1 (pointwise) convolutions in DNNs; 3) a set of On-Chip Monitoring (OCM) blocks connected to an Adaptive Body Biasing (ABB) generator and a hardware control loop, enabling on-the-fly adaptation of transistor threshold voltages. Marsellus achieves up to 180 Gop/s or 3.32 Top/s/W on 2-bit precision arithmetic in software, and up to 637 Gop/s or 12.4 Top/s/W on hardware-accelerated DNN layers.
Enhancing Geometric Perception in VLMs via Translator-Guided Reinforcement Learning
Vision-language models (VLMs) often struggle with geometric reasoning due to their limited perception of fundamental diagram elements. To tackle this challenge, we introduce GeoPerceive, a benchmark comprising diagram instances paired with domain-specific language (DSL) representations, along with an efficient automatic data generation pipeline. This design enables the isolated evaluation of geometric perception independently from reasoning. To exploit the data provided by GeoPerceive for enhancing the geometric perception capabilities of VLMs, we propose GeoDPO, a translator-guided reinforcement learning (RL) framework. GeoDPO employs an NL-to-DSL translator, which is trained on synthetic pairs generated by the data engine of GeoPerceive, to bridge natural language and DSL. This translator facilitates the computation of fine-grained, DSL-level scores, which serve as reward signals in reinforcement learning. We assess GeoDPO on both in-domain and out-of-domain datasets, spanning tasks in geometric perception as well as downstream reasoning. Experimental results demonstrate that, while supervised fine-tuning (SFT) offers only marginal improvements and may even impair performance in out-of-domain scenarios, GeoDPO achieves substantial gains: +26.5% on in-domain data, +8.0% on out-of-domain data, and +39.0% on downstream reasoning tasks. These findings underscore the superior performance and generalization ability of GeoDPO over SFT. All codes are released at https://github.com/Longin-Yu/GeoPerceive to ensure reproducibility.
TR0N: Translator Networks for 0-Shot Plug-and-Play Conditional Generation
We propose TR0N, a highly general framework to turn pre-trained unconditional generative models, such as GANs and VAEs, into conditional models. The conditioning can be highly arbitrary, and requires only a pre-trained auxiliary model. For example, we show how to turn unconditional models into class-conditional ones with the help of a classifier, and also into text-to-image models by leveraging CLIP. TR0N learns a lightweight stochastic mapping which "translates" between the space of conditions and the latent space of the generative model, in such a way that the generated latent corresponds to a data sample satisfying the desired condition. The translated latent samples are then further improved upon through Langevin dynamics, enabling us to obtain higher-quality data samples. TR0N requires no training data nor fine-tuning, yet can achieve a zero-shot FID of 10.9 on MS-COCO, outperforming competing alternatives not only on this metric, but also in sampling speed -- all while retaining a much higher level of generality. Categorical Representation Learning: Morphism is All You Need
We provide a construction for categorical representation learning and introduce the foundations of "categorifier". The central theme in representation learning is the idea of everything to vector. Every object in a dataset S can be represented as a vector in R^n by an encoding map E: Obj(S)toR^n. More importantly, every morphism can be represented as a matrix E: Hom(S)toR^{n}_{n}. The encoding map E is generally modeled by a deep neural network. The goal of representation learning is to design appropriate tasks on the dataset to train the encoding map (assuming that an encoding is optimal if it universally optimizes the performance on various tasks). However, the latter is still a set-theoretic approach. The goal of the current article is to promote the representation learning to a new level via a category-theoretic approach. As a proof of concept, we provide an example of a text translator equipped with our technology, showing that our categorical learning model outperforms the current deep learning models by 17 times. BOOM: Beyond Only One Modality KIT's Multimodal Multilingual Lecture Companion
The globalization of education and rapid growth of online learning have made localizing educational content a critical challenge. Lecture materials are inherently multimodal, combining spoken audio with visual slides, which requires systems capable of processing multiple input modalities. To provide an accessible and complete learning experience, translations must preserve all modalities: text for reading, slides for visual understanding, and speech for auditory learning. We present BOOM, a multimodal multilingual lecture companion that jointly translates lecture audio and slides to produce synchronized outputs across three modalities: translated text, localized slides with preserved visual elements, and synthesized speech. This end-to-end approach enables students to access lectures in their native language while aiming to preserve the original content in its entirety. Our experiments demonstrate that slide-aware transcripts also yield cascading benefits for downstream tasks such as summarization and question answering. Direct Telemetry Access
The emergence of programmable switches allows operators to collect a vast amount of fine-grained telemetry data in real time. However, consolidating the telemetry reports at centralized collectors to gain a network-wide view poses an immense challenge. The received data has to be transported from the switches, parsed, manipulated, and inserted in queryable data structures. As the network scales, this requires excessive CPU processing. RDMA is a transport protocol that bypasses the CPU and allows extremely high data transfer rates. Yet, RDMA is not designed for telemetry collection: it requires a stateful connection, supports only a small number of concurrent writers, and has limited writing primitives, which restricts its data aggregation applicability. We introduce Direct Telemetry Access (DTA), a solution that allows fast and efficient telemetry collection, aggregation, and indexing. Our system establishes RDMA connections only from collectors' ToR switches, called translators, that process DTA reports from all other switches. DTA features novel and expressive reporting primitives such as Key-Write, Append, Sketch-Merge, and Key-Increment that allow integration of telemetry systems such as INT and others. The translators then aggregate, batch, and write the reports to collectors' memory in queryable form.
