| ============================================================================= | |
| This is an update of the Inform games list previously created and updated by | |
| Brendon Wyber. It contains details of all known games created with Inform, | |
| but does not claim to be complete or 100% accurate. If you find any mistakes | |
| in this document, or any omissions, please send the details to the address | |
| below. Also, authors are encouraged to send 'blurbs' for their own games; my | |
| own efforts are rather lacklustre. | |
| neil@highmount.demon.co.uk | |
| Please note, while some games only available as source code are listed, | |
| others have been omitted as being too small or insignificant. In particular | |
| I am refering to the files within the directory below. (Eg Alice Through | |
| the Looking Glass part one, by Gareth Rees, a simple tutorial file.) | |
| ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/infocom/compilers/inform5.5/examples/ | |
| For further information about Inform, try the official Inform WWW page. This | |
| is maintained by Graham Nelson, Inform's creator, and covers such topics as | |
| game design and the mechanics of the compiler. | |
| http://www.gnelson.demon.co.uk/inform.html | |
| Newcomers are advised to download the document how_to_play_these_games.txt | |
| by Gareth Rees, available in the 'if-archive/games/infocom' directory. | |
| Although a little out-of-date, it is still helpful if you are unsure how to | |
| obtain an interpreter to read the game files listed, and explains the | |
| differences between version numbers 3, 5 and 8. The document suggests that | |
| there are no version 8 games available, but this is no longer true, as you | |
| will be able to see in the summary list below. | |

| PART TWO - SUMMARY | |
| ============================================================================= | |
| Below is a brief summary of games included in this list. They can all be | |
| downloaded for no charge; however, one or two may have special registered | |
| versions available for a small fee, which include extra features or help. | |
| Competition entries have been incorporated into the main list - these are | |
| usually separate from the normal 'infocom' games directory, stored in either | |
| 'competition95' or 'competition96', but any updated versions will be | |
| found in 'infocom'. The most recent version is listed below. | |
| Categorisation has proved quite controversial, judging by the responses on | |
| the newsgroup rec.arts.int-fiction. Any players or authors who violently | |
| object to the categories the games have been given are welcome to contact me | |
| with a view to changing them. | |
| (Titles beginning with 'The' or 'A' are ordered by the first letter of the | |
| following word - eg 'The Path To Fortune' is filed under P for Path.) | |

| Title: I-0 | |
| the "jailbait on the interstate" game | |
| Author: Adam Cadre | |
| Where: ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/games/infocom/I-0.z5 | |
| Also: Modern-day. | |
| You're Tracy Valencia, first-year student at the reasonably prestigious | |
| University of Dorado. It's Thanksgiving Day, and you're driving home; | |
| Daddy was perfectly willing to buy you a plane ticket, but like you | |
| told him on the phone, there are much better things to spend the money | |
| on. Birthday presents, for instance -- you turn eighteen tomorrow. | |
| Besides, it's only a four-hour drive. | |
| Two and a half hours into said drive, the car starts making a noise no | |
| piece of machinery should ever make. It's the sort of sound a rhesus | |
| monkey might make being forced down a garbage disposal. Now, Dorado is | |
| nothing but scorching desert from the time you cross the coastal | |
| mountains until you reach the river, but you've got to do something | |
| about this noise. So you pull over -- and the car goes dead of its own | |
| accord. You try to start it up again, but absolutely nothing happens. | |
| You're stuck on the loneliest stretch of Interstate Zero, | |
| miles away from the last sign of civilization. It's twenty minutes to | |
| noon and the temperature's well over a hundred and twenty. It's | |
| beginning to look like Ed and Sandy Valencia's only | |
| daughter might not make it for Thanksgiving dinner... | |

| Piece of Mind is a short, humourous work which uses the first person | |

| What should have been a simple task, watching your old flatmate Malcolm get | |
| married, becomes an awful lot more complicated when it transpires that | |
| Malcolm has disappeared mere hours before the service. You are called in by | |
| one of the bride's aunts to sort out the problem. But how can you help? | |
| Perhaps the answer to the problem lies somewhere within D'Arcy manor, the | |

| Working Title: DJINN! | |
| Author: Mike Phillips | |
| Anticipated Release Date: When its done! | |
| Authors Comment: | |
| When I'm not working on next year's competition entry, I spend time | |
| researching/writing a game called DJINN!, in which the player has to | |
| recapture a Djinni once imprisoned by his grand-father but has since been | |
| released to cause grievous harm to lots of people/places. Current | |
| status: very sketchy; estimated release date: "When it's done". | |
| (Note: although this entry has been in the list since early '96, the author | |
| tells me that it's still being worked on.) | |

| kidnapped. You must discover who did it so you can find your buddy and get | |

| released as Shareware. | |

| Working Title: Stranded | |
| Authors: Johan Berntsson, Frederik Ramsberg and Staffan Friberg | |
| Anticipated Release date: Unknown (was 'mid 1997') | |
| Stranded is currently in alpha testing, playable and winnable, but some | |
| work remains to be done. We are aiming to make it feel "alive" in that the | |
| other characters stroll around and do their jobs, and allow for fairly | |
| complicated interaction. The game is currently (March '97) a 161Kb version | |
| 5 game file, and will probably end up over 200Kb. The vocabulary is likely | |
| to be a bit more than 1000 words. Some details of its history and setting | |
| can be found at | |
| http://www-und.ida.liu.se/~d91frera/stranded.html | |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | |
| Working Title: Gradeschool Armageddon | |
| Author: Charles Mangin | |
| Anticipated Release date: Unknown (was 'Summer 1997') | |
| You awake tomorrow morning and find yourself once more in the fifth | |
| grade. After your mother drops you off for school, you must survive seven | |
| class periods of pure hell, try and remember some long division and | |
| american history, and make it to your bus before it leaves at the end of | |
| the day. | |
| Its a good thing your best friend from the old days is there for comic | |
| relief and to get you into more trouble than you could possibly get into | |
| on your own. | |
| Is that the first bell or the late bell? Where's your math class? | |

| Working Title: BERG | |
| Author: Steven Hillen / Charlies Briscoe-Smith | |
| Anticipated Release Date: Autumn '97 | |
| As the icy water sobers you up, you begin to remember what happened. You | |
| were at the bar all evening. That was nothing unusual. You went for a | |
| late-night stroll round the deck. Again, nothing out of the ordinary. You | |
| normally take a breath of the clean, fresh arctic air before retiring to | |
| your cabin. So why are you freezing cold and soaking wet? Now you remember: | |
| the luxury transatlantic liner turned suddenly, and you staggered drunkenly | |
| to the guard rail. You must have lost your footing and toppled clumsily | |
| overboard. | |

| In the sea | |
| The icy water stings your eyes and roars in your ears. Your dressing gown | |
| seems to be pulling you under the water. You shake your head and push the | |
| hair from your face, gasping for air. Finally struggling free of the heavy | |
| gown, you tread water and look around, shivering. | |
| You are floating in the freezing waters of the arctic ocean. The only | |
| interruption to the flat moonlit plain around you is a large, solitary | |
| iceberg some distance in front of you. | |
| It seems no-one noticed your departure. | |
| --- | |
| BERG was first published in Monitor magazine in 1987. It was written by | |
| Steven Hillen in Atari Basic, and, compared with today's Inform games, was | |
| pretty naff. Since it was presented as part of a series about programming | |
| adventure games, the parser could handle indirect objects, but the room | |
| descriptions were two-line affairs, the object descriptions were | |
| non-existent, and the puzzles were either impossible or easy. | |
| I'm now most of the way through converting the game to Inform. In the | |
| process, I've improved the text somewhat, updated the mechanics, and | |
| improved a few of the puzzles (where I've been able to think of better | |
| ones!). | |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | |
| Working Title: CRASHED | |
| Author: Charles Briscoe-Smith | |
| Anticipated Release Date: The far future | |
| In this game, you are out flying with your friend Andy, who has just | |
| gained his pilot's licence. While flying over the sea, you discover | |
| that fuel has been leaking from the tank, and have to crash land on a | |
| small and (apparently) uninhabited island. While you get away with | |
| cuts and bruises in the violent landing, Andy comes off far worse. Can | |
| you save his life and effect your rescue from the island? | |
| CRASHED is in the early planning stages, and is likely to change a LOT | |
| from the synopsis above. (In fact, the synopsis above is about as far | |
| as I've got.) | |
