[[Joel escapes]]</tw-passagedata><tw-passagedata pid="2" name="20 years pass" tags="" position="413,489">Most of civilization has been destroyed, survivors live in quaratine zones. Joel is working as a smuggler with his friend Tess. 
They hunt down an arms dealer to recover a stolen weapon cache. The arms dealer revealed that he traded goods to a rebel group. 
The leader of the rebel group promised to double the stolen cache and return it to Joel if he agrees to smuggle a girl to the rebel group outside the quartine zone.

Joel discovers that she is infected, but she hasn&#x27;t turned into a zombie. 
Tess reveals that she has been bitten, sacrificing herself; believing that Ellie&#x27;s immunity might be the key to cure infection.

Joel considered leaving Ellie with Tommy. It&#x27;s safe, technically Tommy is a part of the rebel group...

But even he has a code of ethics. 
[[Tommy attempts to bring Ellie to the university, along with some of his men.]] </tw-passagedata><tw-passagedata pid="7" name="Joel takes Tommy&#x27;s advice and leaves for the university with Ellie" tags="" position="488,939">They find the university abandoned, and learned that the rebels moved to a hospital in salt lake city 
As they leave, they are attacked by bandits and joel is severly wounded. 
...stuff happens...
eventually they reach the hospital and joel hands ellie over to the rebels</tw-passagedata><tw-passagedata pid="8" name="Tommy attempts to bring Ellie to the university, along with some of his men." tags="" position="273,1085">When they arrive to the university they find out that the rebels have moved to a hospital in salt lake city. 
As they leave for the hospital, they are attacked by bandits.

On the way, she witnesses the rebels act very immorally; she realizes that the rebels are no better than the very forces they fight against. 
She overhears that they intend to kill her to try to create a cure for the disease.
