"Partners that wanted to make a Mechitzah (the Gemara will explain what this is), build a wall in the middle. In a place where they are accustomed to build Gvil, Gazis, Kefisin, or Leveinin (the Gemara will explain these as well), build with these types, all is according to the custom of the country.",
"For Gvil, one partner gives up three Tefachim (handbreadths) and the other partner does so as well. For Gazis, each gives up two and a half Tefachim. Kefisin require two, and Leveinin require one and a half. Therefore, if the wall falls, the place and stones belong to both of them."

"Rabbi opened the storehouses during years of drought. He said: Let those who have studied scripture enter, those who have studied mishna [enter], those who have studied gemara [enter], those who have studied halakha [enter], those who have studied aggadah [enter] – but let the ammei-ha’aretz not enter. R. Yonatan b. Amram pressed forward and entered. [R. Yonatan] said to [Rabbi Yehudah ha-Nasi]: My master (rabi), support me! [Rabbi] said to [R. Yonatan]: My son, have you studied scripture? He said to him: No. [Rabbi said to R. Yonatan:] Have you studied mishnah? He said to him: No. [Rabbi said to Rabbi Yonatan:] If it is so, how shall I support you? [Rabbi Yonatan said to Rabbi:] Support me like a dog or a raven. He supported him. ",
"After [Rabbi Yonatan] left, Rabbi sat and was saddened and said: Woe unto me, for I have given my bread to an am-ha’aretz! R. Simon the son of Rabbi said before him: Perhaps it was Yonatan b. Amram your student, who does not want to derive material benefit from the honor of the Torah during his lifetime? They examined it and it was found to be so. Rabbi said: Let everyone enter.",
"Rabbi is consistent, for Rabbi said: Disaster does not come upon the world except on account of the ammei-ha’aretz. As in the case of the coronation tax that was imposed on Tiberias. [The people of Tiberias:] came before Rabbi and they said to him: Let the sages pay along with us. [Rabbi] said to them: No. They said to him: We will flee. He said to them: Flee. Half of them fled. [The Romans] removed half [of the tax]. ",
"That half came before Rabbi. They said to him: Let the sages pay along with us. He said to them: No. [They said:] We will flee. [Rabbi said:]Then flee! They all fled, except for a certain washer of garments. [The Romans] imposed the entire tax on the washer. The washer fled and the tax was annulled. Rabbi said: You see, disaster does not come upon the world except on account of the ammei-ha’aretz."

"Rava said to Rabbah bar Mari: From where is this statement of the Sages [derived], that redeeming captives is a great mitzvah? He responded: as it is written: (Jeremiah 15, 2) \"And it shall come to pass, when they say unto thee: Whither shall we go forth? then thou shall tell them: Thus saith the LORD: Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for captivity, to captivity.\" And Rabbi Yochanan said: As we go in to the verse, each part is harsher than the previous ones.",
"The sword is worse than death. If you want, you can say that it is from a verse, and if you want, you can say that it is from logical reasoning. If you want to say that it is from logical reasoning: This one is a disgrace, and this one is not. If you want to say that it is from a verse: (Psalms 116, 15) \"Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints.\"",
"\"Famine is worse than the sword\": If you want to say that it is from logical reasoning: This one, he suffers, that one, he does not suffer. If you want to say that it is from a verse: (Lamentations 4, 9) \"They that are slain with the sword are better Than they that are slain with hunger\" Captivity is the worst of all, for it contains all of them."

"Rav Yehuda from India used to tell: One time we went in a ship and saw a good stone, and a sea monster circling it. when an Amorite swam down to retrieve the stone, the monster tried to swallow our entire ship! Another monster, his fellow, came and took the stone and hung it on the dead monster and it returned to life, and again tried to swallow the ship!
